As children begin to develop independence, refined coordination, and communication skills, they are able to join the Nursery/ Pre- Kindergarten/ Kindergarten Programs. They are now ready to sort, classify and refine the knowledge they have been absorbing since birth. The children become acutely sensitive to order, language acquisition
(written and oral), and refinement of the senses. In many ways, they are little scientists, eager to discover all they can about the world.
The children are extremely attracted to the beautiful Montessori materials at this stage. They become absorbed in the study of numbers, the mathematical operations, letters, words, their meanings and the use of writing instruments to express their thoughts both pictorially and through the written word. They become interested in cultural studies such a geography, art and music. Nature study fascinates the children, and they begin to classify the plants and animals they see. Computers add to and reinforce all of these areas of study.
The sensorial materials present pure shapes, colors, and sizes to the children so that they can refine the way they perceive their world. They learn to be problem solvers, capable of independent, critical thinking. The concrete properties of objects become so clearly defined to the children that abstract thought becomes possible.
With the Language materials children learn about letters and words phonetically, first by writing and then by reading what they have written. Children's literature is an important part of the language program as well, with attractive reading areas to encourage children to enjoy books. By learning phonics within the whole language approach, our students have the tools to become lifelong readers and writers at their own developmental level.

The math materials present mathematical concepts to students in a concrete, hands-on manner. Children are able to comprehend numeration, mathematical operations, the decimal system, fractions and even algebraic concepts in their most basic sense. The abstraction of these concepts will be so much easier for them in the future with a concrete foundation to build upon.
Movement education is an important part of the program. The students become interested in playing organized games as they become capable of cooperating with others in a group. A cooperative atmosphere is encouraged because competition is still difficult for children of this age,
and often leaves them discouraged. Both skill development and creative
expression are encouraged.
